We are the change we have been waiting for

Egalitarian ecovillage at a Glance

Egalitarian ecovillage knows that our strength lies in cooperation not competition. We are looking to co-create a community based on egalitarian principles to provide an alternative culture to a patriarchal dominant culture manifesting as neo-liberal capitalism. We believe gender, race, animal inequality is socially constructed for the creation of hierarchies and control and look for new visions for living where nature and culture is no longer a dichotomy.

Egalitarian ecovillage project is based on indigenous hunter-gatherer cosmologies and ecofeminist theory. Please don't let the feminist word put you off, it is not to exclude men but rather a complex way of understanding hierarchies and the nature of oppression of people, animals and "nature" (it is essentially "anti-patriarchal").

The main points are subsistence living, recreating a culture which is not separate from nature. where community, health and children are at the centre. Where we try to control our wants to control. This includes controlling children, animals and nature. Where even our genders do not need to be controlled and engineered by western society as it has been for a very long time (not to deny biological sex, but rather gender roles and their value in society).

In practice some of what this would mean is we do not keep pets or farm animals because this always entails control and violence and denies wild animals their place. It would also mean a type of subsistence that tries to be more "hunter-gatherer" horticultural (not agricultural) in nature. And an unschooling attitude towards learning for all ages. Gift economy is also an important aspect to get away from a commercial capitalist system of addiction.

A culture where laughter, ridicule, song and dance disperses violence, and integral part of communication.

It will attempt to relive ancestral ways of being, which values relationships above materiality.

Decisions are made in consensus and are always made with nature values in the core.

These are some of the principles of the vision and hopefully with more people engaged a land can be established where people can live and learn through being and doing.

It has been a vision long in the making and still needs refinement and practical experience to manifest and evolve. The vision hopes to re-establish a non-patriarchal egalitarian society even for those who have not grown up in egalitarian societies (e.g. Bayaka, Hadza, etc.) and have lost this way of being, but would like to recreate it.

Bringing Change

This project will be constantly evolving and changing as an complex adaptive system, it advocates localization, yet wishes to spread to many places. Unlike patriarchal capitalism that loves mono-cultures, it wishes to inspire divers cultures which can be developed from these ideas through creativity for different contexts and places.

Home: What We Do

"Because I know I am made from this earth, as my mother’s hands were made from this earth, as her dreams came from this earth and all that I know, I know in this earth, the body of the bird, this pen, this paper, these hands, this tongue speaking, all that I know speaks to me through this earth and I long to tell you, you who are earth too, and listen as we speak to each other of what we know: the light is in us."

- Susan Griffin (Woman and Nature: The Roaring Inside Her)
